The bell tolls for thee!!!

I understand that I live in New York city and there is a culture of poverty here. I get the inevitable homeless thing. I understand there will be an overflow of pitiful souls who have lost their way and eventually end up on the street. These are people who have nothing, and the sight of the homeless here is as old as the city itself. I however, saw something tonight that went a step further, and illuminated the state of this country and the decimation of the middle class.

I had seen a documentary on people of a new sub culture. They root around the trash for food, clothes, etc. I forget the movements name but they are out there, and growing in numbers. What I saw tonight, really shook me up. It brought everything full circle.

I was waiting for someone outside of a super market. I saw a woman, roughly in her twenties, blond, cute, the kind you expect to see at a cool hip bar. She had some bags she was carrying and when she passed the trash left out from the market, she swept down and in and began opening bags for edible refuse. She found some frozen sausages, and some cookie dough, and carefully placed them in her bags. She carefully inspected each bag, to see if there may be something tempting in them, and upon finding possibilities, tore them open and dissected the bags, for anything she may believe she could salvage. It really shook me up, being unemployed, watching her, knowing it was only circumstance separating our situations.

Then when i had began to understand what it was that I was witnessing, A second person quietly approached her, whispering an inquiry about the quality of the goods. This was happening, in front of me, in New York, in America.

What the hell is going on? Wall Street is a ten minute walk from where I saw this. It tells me we are failing our fellow Americans. We are failing as a country. I think we all know it when we look around. It has come home people. It is really bad out there.

America, we need each other. We need to take our country back from the greedy fuckers who let this happen. We need to break the backs of anyone who hordes more then their share, choosing to overlook what I saw. It should not be ignored. It is viral. We need to please do more. Who else will help America if American's can't be bothered?
