I have an idea. Civility and trust. Act civilly, and trust those who have been put in charge. I know it sounds like a Public Announcement from your local sheriff, but I mean it. Be aware of your surroundings and act accordingly. If your in public, provide a decency that allows for a smile. It's when it's toughest to smile is when you need to most. Help the lady across the street. Rub your dog's belly for an extra five minutes. Listen to your mate and what they are saying. Judge from the heart. Think with your soul. This isn't to say put down your weapons and pick up flowers. It simply means be just and true to whatever your cause is. (and don't forget to mind your own damn business, unless invited).
Those who we put in charge, if they are who they say, (and most are not I contend), then they or some of them shall police themselves and purge the offices of corruption. Allow them time to affect the change they promise, or give them enough rope if that is the case. If they say things will get better, then allow some time for change. Sometimes things go backward before moving ahead. Allow a new idea to grow.
If the public, and politicians fail you still, then act up and say your peace. Blog it, tell it on a mountain top, in a bar, anywhere and any way you can. We have lost something precious and we need it back to complete our portrait of America.
We need civility. It has gotten us so far when we had it. People helped people, not pitied them. There were standards where no American would fall below. They are still with us. We simply need to raise them up and use them for the good they provide. It is the shield of camaraderie that shall not be compromised, only fortified. We can use it as the missing cornerstone of the foundation of this country and allow it to no longer teeter on the precipice of luck, capitalism, and greed. However, let it stand tall, the country that shall lead the world into the future. A future that may not be perfect, but a future made of wisdom and experience. We can and should be that envoy. We should answer that call.
