I just don't think people get it. I come across people all the time who just do not seem to grasp the gravity of the situation in the Gulf of Mexico. People seem to understand that an oil spill is bad. They get that this one is worse then most. That's where the disconnect happens.
I even think that a majority of people get that people down south are going to lose their jobs, and maybe their lively hoods. I do not believe they get the impact of the spill on the country as a whole.
As a member of the culinary world I see something more. As an aware citizen of this country I see even more devastation. Indulge me please as I continue...
1) No more gulf shrimp.
2) soon, no more west coast Florida beaches.
3) wetland species becoming extinct, including the everglades.
4) The price of ALL fish that come from the Florida region sky rocketing.
5) The continuing disaster's hitting this region call for lower real estate, lower property values, people moving away, unemployment through the roof, welfare jumping to new levels, and many small business' like restaurants, sporting goods shops, sight seeing, recreational shops, all gone. Possibly hundreds of thousands effected.
6) under currents, and top currents slowly moving the spill up the east coast and outward, allowing all of the above to occur to each eastern coastal state.
7) Estuaries carrying the spill inland, possibly to water supplies, or food sources, such as water for cattle and other live stock, or wild life.
8) Migratory patterns of fish, and birds changing, possibly causing death to species, and more rising costs to all Atlantic fish.
9) predictions allow for the possibility of the spill reaching as far north as Rhode Island, stopping recreation and other small business up the coast, effecting possibly millions of people, allowing a fragile financial system to plummet.
These are things that we can see now. What about the ripple effects. What changes occur in five years, bringing even more negative impact to this country, which is already teetering on collapse.
Why are there not students from MIT working the problem? Where is the Army corps of Engineers? Where is NASA? Oceanographers? Geologists? The government intervention, other then some speeches and more red tape? Why is BP still in business with a lame fucking CEO telling lies to this country about how they will be there until the end? How they will make people complete with compensation, but have barely shelled out a penny?
Why did we learn absolutely NOTHING from the poor souls buried in a coal mine? There is a need for regulation, because the executives are greedy and myopic. PERIOD!!!!!!!
Why are there still lobbyists rallying for big oil and drilling? WHERE THE FUCK IS MY REPRESENTATION? Why am I not being heard!!??!
Obama, with all due respect, you are failing every day you do not step in and take direct control. You look like a fucking sell out. This country keeps falling, rung by rung, and you keep telling the assholes who let it happen to do something. If they were going to do something, none of the bullshit over the last two years would have happened. Stop whining about justice and get some. YOU sit in the big chair. Close BP. Let everyone know you mean business, or keep looking like a pandering whore. I was hoping the bush years were over........ I am beginning to wonder if this is just another sleazy president who just wants a legacy, and sold me a bill of goods.
